UNIT 6: GEOMETRY
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Welcome to Unit 6: Geometry and Test Prep
Today, in class, your child received their Unit 6: Geometry outline. It includes all of the learning targets taught in this unit, along with an example of each. To begin, we will be finding the area and perimeter of common shapes like rectangles and triangles. This should be review for your child. We will then move forward and work with composite figures. Finally we will work with 3-Dimensional figures and determine the surface area and volume of these shapes. As always, students will be expected to apply these skills to solve real world word problems.
Prerequisite Skills:
- Plotting points on a coordinate plane
- multiplication and division of whole numbers
- multiplication and division of fractions (unit 3)
- multiplication and division of decimals (unit 4)
- inverse operations (unit 5)
This unit will be taught along with our test prep unit. In order to best prepare your child for the NYS assessment we will review some of our “Priority Learning Targets” during class time. These priority learning targets have already been taught this year, but are important to review while preparing for the NYS assessment. Since the geometry unit is shared with the test prep unit it is more important than ever that you and your child are monitoring upcoming due dates and assessment dates.
Mastery Quizzes: 50 pts. each
Mastery quizzes are short quizzes that assess 2 – 3 learning targets. Your child will be given this quiz once the learning targets have been taught in class. The best way to prepare for these quizzes is by completing classwork and homework. If your child is struggling with homework assignments please contact us, or have your child attend an extra help session.
- Mastery Quiz #1:
- I can determine the perimeter of a two dimensional polygon.
- I can determine the area of a two dimensional regular polygon (triangle, rectangle, parallelogram).
- I can graph coordinate pairs to create a polygon and determine the perimeter and area of the shape.
- Mastery Quiz #2:
- I can decompose an irregular polygon into rectangles and triangles to determine the total area.
- I can solve real world problems involving perimeter and area.
- Mastery Quiz #3:
- I can determine the volume of a rectangular prism with whole number or fractional dimensions.
- I can represent a 3 dimensional figure using a net.
- I can determine the total surface area of a 3 dimensional figure from a net.
Unit Test: 100 pts. Approximate date:_______5/12/17_________________
Your student to review his or her notes to study for this exam
Performance Task: 100 pts.: Approximate date:_____5/15/17___________________
This is an in class assessment. It is a multi-step word problem, similar to the kind of questions students will see on Day 3 of the NYS test.
Culminating Project: 100 pts.
The culminating project will be assigned in the middle of the unit. It will not be due until the end of the unit. It will assess all learning targets. You will be able to access this on
Learning Activities
Your child will be completing a variety of learning activities in class that reflect the learning targets for Unit 6. These will be graded, and you will be able to track your child’s progress online.
Thank you for your continued support.
